Perfect Pushup I was browsing the news today and came across an article that I found really inspiring.  Inc.com (a magazine for entrepreneurs) posted an article about the founder and CEO of Perfect Fitness, Alden Mills.  Alden is Tepper Alum (well actually GSIA back then) who worked for a company for a while after graduation but then struck out on his own.  The article describes some of his big mistakes and then how he focused on what he knew and came up with the Perfect Pushup (seen to the left).

It is great to hear a real story about what it takes to make it.  You will have struggles on your way but if you believe in yourself and your product, you can make it happen.

Does Facebook Make You Dumb?

A recent study, released on Monday, concludes that Facebook users (at the college level) have lower GPAs than those who do not use Facebook. It does seem like the study is pretty worthless since it doesn't answer any "whys" and the data is too small (only 219 people) to make any real conclusions, but it is intriguing none the less.

The data showed that Facebook users had an average GPA of between 3 and 3.5 compared to non-Facebook users which have an average of 3.5 to 4. If that pans out, there is a pretty significant difference. The author points out that the study doesn't show which variable dependent in this correlation (i.e., Does Facebook use lower your GPA or do people with lower GPAs use Facebook?) but it is undeniable that there is a connection between the two.

So what do you think? Does Facebook make you dumb or are you dumb if you use Facebook?

Team Size

I'm in a class this term made up of a diverse set of students from different colleges at the university. A little diversity is a good thing, but don't let anyone lie to you and say it makes things more efficient. Diversity never speeds anything up. The value of diversity comes from different points of view and normally more discussion on topics.

To the point, my professor assigned a final project with only two weeks left in the term. This would be ok, but he also assigned our teams with members coming from different programs. On my team I only knew one member which is the same case for everyone else except for one guy who didn't know anyone else. We spent the first third of our time working together finding out who the other team members are and we aren't meeting until we pass the half way point of the project. Based on this I realized that we have a problem. My attention has been drawn to the size of the diverse team.

When a team has been working together prior to a new assignment, the group dynamic has already been established and there is already a lot of research into how team size relates to team dynamics. However, I have a new rule of thumb for new team formation (at least in acedemia). A team should consist of no more then 1 member per week for the length of the assignment plus 1.
Team Members <= Project Weeks + 1
As an example, for this 2 week project, we should have at most 3 team members. If we were given 4 weeks, then 5 members would have been acceptable. If you only have a project lasting a week, then you shouldn't have more than 2 members. Whether you buy into the concept that a team should be 5 members or 8 members (or somewhere in between) will set your threshold as to how far this can be extrapolated to, but for most short projects, this makes a lot of sense ot me based on my experience with successful and less sucessful teams.

Recently there was a cheating scandal in the news dealing with the GMAT (the SATs for Business School). A writer at BusinessWeek got a hold of me to get my opinion as a current top tier business school student.

We talked about it for 10-15 minutes (IMHO, let the cheaters pay) which resulted in a few lines in the story . To clarify, while I understand the pressure to cheat I:

1) Don't condone it
2) Don't think it would help
3) Think think they should revoke the scores (and ban them from taking the test again) anyone who posted questions (and kick them out of school)
4) Think they should revoke the scores of anyone trolling the boards for live questions. (Although perhaps they should let them take the test again).

Luckily, my parents have always been supportive of whatever I wanted to do and were happy when I wanted to get a MSBA from San Diego State University. While this is very reputable program that some of my friends have gone through (and my undergrad alma mater), but not a top tier MBA program.
Nothing too much to add today, but the South Africa trip is now being featured on http://www.cmu.edu.

As you may know, during spring break I want to South Africa with a group of students from Tepper. This was the first trip to Africa by the business school and we are currently being featured on the Tepper web site. (I've heard rumors that we may make the main CMU site at some point).



Nothing really exciting to add, but that is me, second from the left. Now I just have to figure out how to make it onto a poster in Posner.
